A clogged carburetor is most commonly caused by leaving fuel in the lawn mower for a long period of time. Over time, some of the ingredients in the fuel may evaporate, leaving behind a thicker, stickier substance. This sticky fuel can clog up the carburetor and cause the engine to stall.
The spark plugs are worn or damaged
If you find that your lawnmower keeps dying, or keeps stalling while cutting grass, then inspect the spark plugs. Look for signs of damage or wear. Something as simple as a cracked porcelain insulator can mean an electrode has been damaged or burned away.
An improperly routed belt can cause the engine to die when the blades are engaged. To check belt routing, lower the deck to its lowest setting and remove the belt guard by the drive pulley. Next, lift the belt over the pulley and remove the pins that support the deck at the rear.

Examine the plug cap for arcing and the coil wire for chafing. If damaged, it will cause an intermittent no start. Higher temperatures create higher resistance to the flow of voltage; that`s why coils usually fail when the mowers are hot and start working again when the engine cools.
Condensation inside the gas tank is one culprit, but moisture can also enter the system through a loose or ill fitting gas cap. The best solution is to drain the mower`s gas tank and refill it with fresh gasoline. A clogged fuel filter can also cause a mower engine to die.
A Dirty Carburetor Can Cause a Lawnmower To Start Then Die
By far, the most common issue that causes a stalled motor is a dirty carburetor. The carburetor on your engine is the thing that draws in air and mixes it with the fuel. Contrary to what the movies might make you think, gasoline itself is not very flammable.
A bad spark plug often causes an engine cylinder to misfire or sound like it`s struggling. The engine might even stall out completely while you are mowing. You may also notice that it becomes increasingly more difficult to restart the mower each time that it dies.
Mower blades are spinning 4000 RPMs. An unbalanced blade spinning that fast will cause a significant amount of vibration, which will put stress on yout blade shaft, spindle, and even the engine.
It is critical that the lawn mower battery remains fully charged if it has not been used in the last few days. If the clutch fails due to a weak battery or charging system, the engine may stall, so charge the battery with a charger and try again.
As the fuel level drops, a vacuum begins to form in the fuel tank because air can get in to fill the space the consumed fuel occupied. After about 10 or 15 minutes, the vacuum will become strong enough that fuel will stop flowing to the carburetor and the lawnmower will die.
If your lawn mower starts, runs briefly, then dies these are the four most common reasons that`s happening: Dirty carburetor / clogged carburetor bowl. Old gasoline that has gone bad. Dirty or defective spark plugs.
Check and clean the vent. Surging is also caused by water that got into the fuel. A mower left in a heavy rain or condensation on a hot summer day can choke the engine. Empty the gas tank, properly dispose of the old fuel and try a fresh batch of gasoline.

The oil will not drain out of my craftsman 18 HP Briggs & Straton riding lawn mower. I unplug the drain cap. I took the dipstick out, but the oil will not drain out. The dipstick indicates the oil is full. It’s acting as if the oil is clogged. It’s been sitting since last summer. How can I get the oil out?

My craftsman kohler 18 hp GT 6000 stalls out when I engage the mower pto. It runs fine until I hit the toggle switch, will not stay running, then backfires and stalls
